Ed's sweater
We really still don't know how Ed found us. He happened along one day after spring shearing last year as Joanne was spreading out fleece to dry on tarps in the yard. How on earth do you find us, when you come here from New York City (Queens)? We have given up trying to figure out how people end up at Common Threads Farm...they just come for us to enjoy, that is all we can figure. Anyway....Ed wanted a sweater with a zipper. So we whipped up a sweater for Ed with a zipper...only problem is the sweater was a little bit heavy, even for a Ziggy's zipper. So, we took it out and doctored the sweater and it is a beauty.

Laila'a sweater
Sometimes we connect with people, and it is a lasting impression. We meet briefly then don't meet again for a while. Laila found our website and we realized she didn't live too far away, so I drove to meet her and it was like finding an old friend. She wanted a sweater and we talked about it some, but it never seemed to materialize between our two schedules. Then, last year, we reconnected at Rhinebeck sheep and wool festival and talks of sweaters began in earnest. Laila's sweater, like Ed's is a one-of-a-kind that I knitted as I went along. It was a lot of fun. There will never be another exactly like it. A hat for sale in our shop nearly matched perfectly, and so there is Laila, looking fabulously warm in her gorgeous sweater.

Laila and friends
Laila and a car full of friends reach the farm on a raw early spring day. The sweater was warm and necessary and we were happy to reconnect and visit for awhile.

Ed says the sweater is really warm...and easy statement when he is standing on the porch on a 65 degree June day. So then he says, "I didn't believe it when you told me it would be the warmest sweater I ever wore, but when it was 30-40 below zero at my camp in the Adirondacks this winter and I was outside trying to charge my car battery, I didn't feel a bit cold. Just this sweater with a windbreaker over it." So there it is....words from a (warm) disbeliever :o).

Ed must be related to Tim (who also has an Icelandic sweater from Common Threads). I took beautiful pictures of him and nearly all are with his eyes closed! What are the chances of that happening! We are glad that Ed found us and visits us, and that he is warm in his transformed Icelandic sweater!

Tim's sweater
Three pictures of Tim...all with his eyes closed! What are the chances of that? If his eyes were open you would see how perfectly the blue in his sweater matches. Kendall had this sweater made for Tim last Christmas, and I dare say that it keeps him plenty warm!

Icelandic Sweater for sale
A marvelously heavy and warm sweater made from the ground-up, literally. This sweater's fleece was sheared from three of our sheep, washed, carded and spun, then knitted. Included with the sweater is a card with pictures of the sheep from which it originated. This sweater is a large size. $250.00

This sweater is a men's extra-large,and the previous picture did not do it justice. Thankfully, Dan came to our farm for the fiber tour and tried it on for me. I really didn't know how great this sweater looked until now! This is a sweater that will last forever (or longer). Thanks for modeling for me Dan! (Poor guy didn't know what he was in for when all he wanted was to visit a sheep farm!) (Dan returned this winter and left "HIS" sweater) Dan and Chris from South Salem, NY, more than 150 miles from here came to visit and they find themselves part of Common Threads Farm... they are now interwoven into the fabric of our farm and our lives as friends and we are thankful that these travelers wandered on over to Shushan. Be warm Dan!

Kendal Loves Cables
Kendal's husband Tim asked Joanne to design his wife, Kendal a sweater for Christmas. He said, "Kendal loves cables". Here she is modeling her one-of-a-kind cable, designed from the ground-up with fleece from our excellent ram, Boramere. We don't traditionally think of doing this sort of knitting with Icelandic yarn, but it only serves to prove the versatility of the Icelandic breed. The pattern is a Common Threads Farm original.

Tim and Kendal

Tim and Kendal stopped to allow us to use them modeling their sweaters. Tim's gray sweater came primarily from May who happens to be Kendal's sheep fleece (Boramere's) mother! What great models!

The Shushan Sugar House Hat
The Shushan Sugar House Hat was designed to be both warm and stylish. Joanne's dad says that it will be too warm to wear in the Sugar House during Maple Syrup season, but he will definitely be using it while collecting sap! This cap is knit with hand spun Icelandic Roving , then felted. It is available to be ordered, hand made for $28.00 or there will soon be Common Threads Farm knitting patterns available. Either way, if you play outside in the cold, this hat is for you.
